In the world of all things social media, we want to take a moment to talk cyber security and the importance of making sure all your accounts are safe from hacks and theft. We recently experienced a scary situation with a client whose account was held for ransom and had to quickly jump in to make sure they were able to recover their account and all the hard work we had put in to making their social media marketing successful.
Here are a few tips that you can easily use to ensure your accounts are safe from cyber harm:
1. Start with beefing up your passwords. Many times people do not realize how vulnerable their information is when creating accounts on social media. They come up with an easy to remember password - for convenience - and don’t really think about how easy it is for skilled hackers to break into their accounts. Make sure your passwords contain different letters, numbers, and symbols that are not connected to things like your name, loved one’s names, or your favorite food, things that people can easily guess about you. You can go online and research commonly used passwords, you’ll be amazed how common your existing passwords might be.
2. Next, make sure you are using a different password for each account. Once a hacker figures out one password, they will try getting into your other accounts. It is important that your passwords vary so that they do not gain access to all of your accounts, creating more headache and work for you to regain them if you do get hacked. On that note, you can change your passwords every few months to ensure that hackers are not gaining your passwords by keeping them the same for long periods of time.
3. Use multi-factor/two-step authentication, where available. This adds a second step of security to your accounts and are linked to your phone or email so you will get a notification each time you or someone else tries to log into your accounts, even if they have your login info. This is crucial in saving your account when someone is trying to break in as you will be notified ahead of time. It gives you a warning and allows you to personally log in and make changes before your account is compromised.
4. Another tip is to be mindful of who you are giving access to and sharing your information with. Never give anyone you do not trust or personally know your login, personal, or financial information. If you get a message, even an email that looks like it is coming from a trusted source, that is asking for any personal information, do not hand any personal info over.
Finally, after going through this with a client, our founder and owner would like to share her input with you all!
Hey there, Delphine here, the owner of The 530 & CO. I am so happy to be sharing my experience with this hacking debacle, because this happens to a lot of people, once you pass a certain amount of followers. My biggest advice is, DO NOT send out any information VIA email. Especially your Credit Card information or log in to any accounts, even if they look legitimate. Also - take advantage of the two-step verification on all of your social media platforms people! It’s worth it, because you can catch the hacker in action. Stay safe out there.
We hope this has brought some light to the topic of cybersecurity. Now go take a second to evaluate and change your passwords!
